Summary

ELEX certainly has a hell of a high concept. In a nutshell, it's a huge open world game that brings together both sci-fi and fantasy elements - not in a soft 'it's sci-fi with the odd hint of fantasy a bit like Star Wars' sense, but in a 'you could very well see a mech stomping on an ogre' sort of a way!

The premise is straightforward enough - Magalan, the world of ELEX, was once home to a highly advanced civilisation before an asteroid strike rendered it a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The meteor also left deposits of a substance now found in nearly everything - the titular Elex - which is highly sought after to be used in everything from magic spells to highly advanced sci-fi weapons. Players must navigate this broken (but surprisingly lush, all things considered) world across five different areas and ultimately align themselves with one of the five factions that inhabits it.

The game plays out as an open world action RPG. Combat has a hint of Dark Souls about it, based as it is on dodges and counters. The world, meanwhile, is yours to explore at will. You even have the option of cruising around using a jetpack, which is a pretty novel way to navigate this sort of game.

The real hook, though, is that clash of high science and magic, reason and emotion, mechas and ogres!
