Summary

Western gamers might not realise it, but Puyo Puto Tetris is a clash of two puzzle titans. Yes, even your grandma's heard of Tetris, one of the best-selling games of all time, and it needs little introduction. There's a pretty good chance, however, that even your hardcore gamer mates have never heard of Puyo Puyo. Over in the west it's probably best known for its reskin as Doctor Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine waaaaaay back on the Mega Drive, or maybe for its short-lived popularity as Puyo Pop around the start of the millenium. Meanwhile, over in Japan it's been selling like hotcakes since the early 1990s and over 20 Puyo Puyo games have been released.

It's another falling block game, but in it players must eliminate blobs - or 'puyos' - from the board by matching them up in groups of four or more according to colour. Where Tetris is more about speed and dexterity, however, Puyo Puyo offers a more strategic, less frenetic game.

As Puyo Puto Tetris's name suggests, it brings together both games for one puzzle extravaganza. Players can get stuck in over a wide range of modes, either in single-player, local multiplayer arcade or online multiplayer, the two games' slightly different styles both complementing and playing off each other in this zingy mash-up.

Perhaps the most interesting mode of all, however, is the fusion mode that has both Puyos and Tetriminos together on the same board for a challenging and somewhat chaotic game that combines the best of both games.
