Summary

It's been eight years, but Adol Christin is back to continue the 30 year legacy of the Ys series (pronounced like 'cheese' but with out the 'ch', if you were wondering) in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA.

Adol awakens, shipwrecked and stranded on a mysterious and cursed island. He's not alone, though. He and the other survivors must come together to build a village and defend themselves against the fearsome beasts that roam the island.

Early on the emphasis is on exploration so that you can gather resources to fortify your village with. The difficulty curve is tantalising, slowly opening up the game world with new abilities such as gloves that enable you to climb vines to new areas or an item that allows you to breathe underwater.

As you progress you must form bonds with other characters, strengthening both your party and your community. You will also find that as you get stronger the island itself, with its deserted shipwrecks and forgotten towers, will come to the fore, as will your strange connection with a girl called Dana when you dream...

Combat, the other tentpole of the Ys series, is action-heavy with a strong emphasis on tactical play and making the most of your party's different skills.

All in all, this is a game with a lot of meat on its bones that's sure to satisfy longtime fans and newcomers alike.
