Summary

Team Sonic Racing is the third game from Sheffield-based Sumo Digital to star the spiky speedster. While it certainly shares some DNA with Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing and its follow-up, however, Team Sonic Racing is a bit of a new spin on arcade and kart racing.

It's not just that this game is focused solely on the world of Sonic - following in the tire tracks of Codemasters' Onrush, this is a game that borrows from Overwatch in its focus on teamwork. Players group together in teams of three and must co-operate if they want to win the day. Racers can pass power-ups between them and even give each other speed boosts by skimming past their fellow drivers. It all builds towards the Ultimate Bar, which will deliver the entire team a crazy amount of boost.

Obviously, this is a style of play that lends itself to multiplayer and both online (for up to 12 players) and split-screen (for up to four) are supported across multiple modes which include Grand Prix Mode, Exhibition Mode, Time-Trial and Team Adventure Mode.

You can also play solo, though, with AI stepping in to fill the gap. Adventure Mode, in particular, will not only explain just what all these Sonic characters are doing on the racetrack but also get the solo player used to all the game features and characters.

Sonic has always been about having the need for speed, but this is a game that takes it to a whole new level with addition of teamplay.
