Summary

This Toki remake has been a long time coming in a number of ways. For starters, it's based on an arcade classic that's just shy of 30 years old as this Switch remake hits shelves. On top of that, this remake was actually originally announced nearly a decade back itself, before evaporating into the ether for the best part of nine years. And yet, here it is on the Switch in a stylish remake.

It's a run and gun shoot-'em-up-cum-platformer that has you play as a Tarzan type hero turned ape as he tries to rescue his gal-pal Miho from an evil local witchdoctor who has nothing but bad intentions. His journey will take him through jungles, lakes, ice palaces and fiery caverns as he battles all sorts of nasties to save his lady love.

Fortunately, he's got a variety of abilities on hand including agility-boosting rabbit feed and a long range... well, let's not beat around the bush, it's a spit attack. He'll also be helped out by a few choice items, including an American football helmet, a tuba and a pair of ferns.

The original was beloved for its cool visual design, and the developers of the remake have taken that to heart while avoiding the temptation to go for a 16 bit retro look. Instead, they've opted for a smooth hand-drawn style that's a little reminiscent of Wonder Boy and the Dragon's Trap.

Whether you're looking for a swing down memory lane or something pretty for the kids and Christmas, Toki's going to be a treat.
