Summary

Game Boy fanatics, as you can guess from the title what we have here is a racing game based on the film Toy Story 2. Top stuff. The Game Boy is ideal for 2D karting style games, but this title stands out because you can race as your favourite characters from the extremely popular film.

Toy Story Racer features 10 tracks based in and around Disney’s computer generated universe. Quite a lot of racing considering how small the cartridges are. What sets Toy Story racer apart from the other racers is that the backgrounds are pre-rendered animations are constantly cycling to give the impression of movement. It is a unique approach that is very stylish. The graphics are well drawn taking into account the hardware limitations of the Game Boy, but bear in mind you can’t take your PlayStation with you wherever you go.

Another cool feature is that the game adapts to your skill level. An approach that more games should follow. If you are doing badly because you are learning the tracks the computer opponents will slow down a bit and if you are absolutely flying they will pick up their pace. A very nice touch.

Toy Story Racer is team based and you pick up to four characters to be on your side. If you run out of time on track, you will lose the option of picking the driver you lost to. Toy Story Racer is a fun game for a while, but unfortunately there is not a lot of gameplay to keep coming back to.
