Summary

The original CDV release of Cossacks brought real-time strategy fans a comprehensive game, complete with vast amounts of strategy and plenty of battle scenarios. Some real-time strategy games are targeted towards combat, while others are directed more towards management. With Cossacks, you get to see both sides of the RTS coin. The Art of War improves upon what’s there and adds a little extra. Good enough for us!

An important element of Cossacks is the resource management. It is important to maintain your economy as well as your troops. There are six main resources: food, wood, stone, gold, iron and coal. All game units consume resources. For example, artillery and handgun shots use iron and coal. If you expand your army too fast and cannot feed it or maintain it, there is bound to be a riot. The price of goods in the game is balanced to a supply and demand economy.

But just as you get your resources balanced, an invasion begins and you’re forced to defend your empire by any means necessary. You must manage allied units, move them into position and attack with full force. You must wear down the enemy’s defences before they do the same to you. On the other hand, you can go on the offensive and do a little conquering of your own.

The Art of War expansion offers a simple interface, as well as several levels of difficulty and a ‘save mission scenario’ option. This makes Cossacks much more accessible than it previously was. Add to that a mission creator and an auto-debug mode, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a polished RTS game.
