Summary
The fundamental concept behind Yager is the common or garden shoot-em-up. But, as the contemporary gamer demands a lot more bang for their buck these days, the game's core elements of flying and shooting bad guys come enveloped in a deep and rich storyline, complete with strong narrative, non-linear gameplay and a fair amount of exploration.
Players take on the role of Magnus Tide, a freelance pilot and owner of the low-air ship 'The Sagittarius'. In much the same way as everyone's favourite Star Wars character Han Solo, Magnus and his ship are available for hire, for the right price. Unfortunately for Magnus, the future world in which Yager is set is under threat from a rather sinister coalition that is attempting to take control of the skies in order to dominate the people. As you begin the game, meeting with and working for local traders, things soon start to turn nasty as the coalition begins to pose a much bigger threat. What the world needs is a hero - that's where you come in.
The structure of the game is held together by a series of campaigns. Early on in the game, these consist of fairly simple, tutorial-esque missions, designed to teach you the ship's basic flying controls and to introduce you to some fundamental combat techniques. For example, one early mission has you safely shooting down an out-of-control freight ship before it causes any destruction; another sees you head off to a nearby hillside for a bit of target practice.
Things soon start to take a turn for the worse and you find yourself drawn into the fight against constitutional power, conspiracy and control. The simple solution, therefore, is to arm your ship to the teeth and take to the skies.
There's a lot more to Yager than would initially be apparent. Although the gameplay mostly involves flying and shooting, the game itself takes place within an explorable, living game world, packed with over 20 different characters to interact with, and features an absorbing and intriguing plot.
